Dr. Bassem Safadi is a specialist in bariatric surgery and has been performing operations such as laparoscopic and open gastric bypass, banding, and sleeve gastrectomy since 2001. Dr. Safadi is well known in the region and he is frequently invited to perform surgery, teach and mentor other surgeons in the Middle East.
His scope of work includes open and laparoscopic surgery of the digestive system (examples: surgery for gall bladder disease, stomach cancer and ulcers, acid reflux disease and hiatal hernia, achalasia, colon cancer, colon polyps, appendicitis, diverticulitis, hemorrhoids and anal fissure). He also performs abdominal wall hernia repair, abdominoplasty, and endocrine surgery (thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal surgery).
Dr. Bassem Safadi graduated in 1992 from the American University of Beirut Faculty of Medicine. He earned the degree of Doctor of Medicine with distinction and was awarded the Penrose Award and the AUB Alumni Academic Excellence Award. He started his surgical training in Washington, DC with an internship in surgery at the Washington Hospital Center (1992-1993). He then completed his surgical residency (1993-1997) at the Case Western Reserve University Integrated Program in Cleveland, Ohio. Following that he pursued further training in Surgical Endoscopy in Cleveland (1997-1998) and in advanced laparoscopic surgery at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) in San Francisco, California (1998-9).
Dr. Safadi is certified by the American Board of Surgery (http://www.absurgery.org) and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (http://www.facs.org). He is an active member of American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (http://asmbs.org) and the international Federation for the Surgery of Obesity (http://www.ifso.com). He has active medical licenses in Lebanon and in Qatar. He is member of the Lebanese Order of Physicians and the Lebanese Society for General Surgery.
Dr. Safadi is currently the Chair of Surgical Services at Aman Hospital, a private healthcare facility in Doha where Quality meets Luxury. Dr. Safadi moved to Doha in 2021 while the hospital was still under construction and was a key member of the team that worked on launching the outpatient and inpatient services. Aman Hospital is destined to become a leader in private healthcare in Qatar and the region and is the first affiliate of the Imperial Private Healthcare Network.
Dr. Safadi began his surgical career in 1999 at Stanford University in California, USA as an assistant professor of surgery and the director of the minimally invasive surgical fellowship. In 2006, he returned to Lebanon to join the American University of Beirut (AUB) as an associate professor of surgery and rose to the rank of professor of clinical surgery and vice-chair of the department of surgery. He founded and directed the metabolic and bariatric surgery program at AUB until he departed in 2018 to head the department of surgery at the Lebanese American University Gilbert and Rose-Marie Chagoury School of Medicine. In 2021, he left Lebanon to join Aman Hospital in Qatar as the founding chair of the surgical services.
